The bustling Turkish harbour town of Fethiye is in the beautiful setting of a large sheltered bay backed by mountains, the town dates back to the sixth century B.C. It was once a grand Lycian city called Telmessus and has many historical sites including a series of Lycian Rock Tombs standing majestically in the cliff behind the town. The largest of these is that of King Amyntas, identified from its inscription to be from the 4th century BC.

You can also book a variety of boat trips at the harbour front, the twelve islands boat trip for instance is a very popular choice with plenty of chance to swim and snorkel in crystal clear coastal waters. The boat trips represent excellent value for money at typically £8 for the day and usually include a bbq lunch. Highlights include: Butterfly Valley, Aquarium Bay, St Nicholas Island with its ruined hilltop monastery, Cold Water Bay where ice cold from the nearby mountains water mixes with the sea from underwater springs, Cleopatra's Bath, Dockyard Island. For the more adventurous diving trips can be booked with PADI certified dive schools aimed at both the beginner and more advanced divers.

Fethiye Old Town

Head away from the harbour and within a few minutes you are in Fethiye old town , still very Turkish in character it has many excellent restaurants and bars, this is a great place to spend the warm evenings watching the world go by. If you want to shop, Fethiye old town has an excellent selection of gift shops selling leather, gold, jewellery, including shops selling a vast selection of beautiful Turkish carpets.
Try your hand at haggling.

Fethiye has a small number of very friendly hotels and pensions, with very reasonable room rates which offer fantastic holiday value. There are also a limited number of privately owned Villas and Apartments offering excellent holiday accommodation.

Fethiye has no beach, so if you want to soak up the sun head for Calis, the frequent water taxis that serve Calis Beach run from the harbour every half hour. Sovalye Island, which lies opposite the harbour, blazes with flowers in the spring is also well worth a visit early in the year.

Being only 50 km from Dalaman International Airport, Fethiye is a wonderful choice as a base to explore the rest of the region, as well as the many attractions that the town has to offer, only a short ride away by local bus (Dolmus) journey is the ghost town of Kaya, Hisaronu, Ovacik and the lovely Ölü Deniz.
