The bustling
Turkish harbour town of Fethiye is in the beautiful setting of a large
sheltered bay backed by mountains, the town dates back to the sixth
century B.C. It was once a grand Lycian city called Telmessus and has
many historical sites including a series of Lycian Rock Tombs standing
majestically in the cliff behind the town. The largest of these is that
of King Amyntas, identified from its inscription to be from the 4th
century BC.

Fethiye has
always been one of Turkeys important ports; the large harbour now houses
everything from local fishing boats and Gullets to luxury ocean going
yachts. Take an evening stroll along the palm lined promenade and you
will find a variety of waterside restaurants selling freshly caught local
fish.
You can
also book a variety of boat trips at the harbour front, the twelve islands
boat trip for instance is a very popular choice with plenty of chance
to swim and snorkel in crystal clear coastal waters. The boat trips
represent excellent value for money at typically £8 for the day
and usually include a bbq lunch. Highlights include: Butterfly Valley,
Aquarium Bay, St Nicholas Island with its ruined hilltop monastery,
Cold Water Bay where ice cold from the nearby mountains water mixes
with the sea from underwater springs, Cleopatra's Bath, Dockyard Island.
For the more adventurous diving trips can be booked with PADI certified
dive schools aimed at both the beginner and more advanced divers.
