Kaya
The road from Fethiye climbs past the ancient fortress and rock tombs
snaking up the pine covered mountainside, with splendid view back over
Fethiye through the trees. A few miles on and you reach the lovely Kaya
valley, with its rich fertile farming land which supports the local
village. This is a peaceful farming community where a small number of
the old stone houses full of Turkish character have carefully been restored
to provide holiday accommodation for visitors.
This is a perfect spot for total relaxation; the cool tranquil air is
wonderful after the heat and bustle of nearby Fethiye. Nothing seems
to have affected the slow pace of traditional rural life here.
A great place to explore if you love walking, cycling or horse riding
or if you just want to relax try one of the traditional local teahouses
or restaurants which overlook the fields.
The Kaya
valley is famous for its 'Ghost town', all that remains now area the
crumbling shells of the houses, shops and churches of a once thriving
Greek community which fell into ruin when abandoned after the population
exchange of 1926.
