Villa
and Apartment listings for Dalyan Turkey
Since 1986, Dalyan and it's delta has been a conservation area and wildlife
sanctuary. Because of this, the small town on the South West coast of
the Mediterranean has kept it's Turkish charm and appeal. Many people
return year after year, a few never leave.
Dalyan is set on the river. The town sits on the Dalyan river fed by
the local mountain streams that converge on the Koycegiz lake and opposite
the famous 3000 B.C. rock tombs and ancient city of Caunos.
Locals and tourists alike enjoy the natural mud baths and thermal springs
at the side of Koycegiz lake, then meander through the maze of reed
beds, the reed beds are 2.5 -3m high and as well as preventing odours,
erosion and pollution, are home to a variety of wildlife species including
stripe neck terrapins and turtles, fresh water fish and the spectacularly
coloured kingfishers, passing the ancient rock tombs carved into the
side of the mountain 3000 years ago. The river opens onto the beautiful
Iztuzu beach, a beautiful 5 km sandbank separating the crystal clear
shallow waters of the Mediterranean and which is home to the endangered
loggerhead sea turtle.

At the
boat end of Iztuzu beach you will find a few sun beds and shades, a
small bar offering light snacks and cold drinks and a local lady rolling
traditional pancakes. At the dolmus end, similar amenities are available
as well as the welcoming shelter of pine trees.
Building
proposals on this unspoilt stretch of beach were halted in 1985 when
David Belamy led a successful world wide campaign to prevent development
to enable protection of the Loggerhead sea turtles nesting sites. Walk
300m from either end of the beach and you will be completely alone.
This whole area is now deemed environmentally protected and a wildlife
sanctuary.
There are no high rise buildings in Dalyan, but simply villas, small
family run hotels and local housing that blend into the beautiful landscape
of mountains and cotton fields around it. The lush greenery and abundance
of fig, banana, pomegranate and citrus fruits trees that grow everywhere
are supplied by artesian water.
This truly is a beautiful place and was nominated by the Independent
Newspaper in July 2003 as one of the best unspoilt holiday destinations
in the world.
